• Johnny has written of over 60 professional theatre and opera productions.

    Work includes the award winning Wendy Hoose, No Love Songs, The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam, Seven Year Itch, A Perfect Stroke, 101 Dalmatians and The Joke.

    She’s Behind You (a collaboration with multiple Tony & Olivier director John Tiffany) won several awards at the Edinburgh Festival in 2025, including The Scotsman’s Fringe First for Best New Writing.

    For several years Johnny worked as part of the core writing team for BBC’s Drama River City (with 48+ hours of credits). He was nominated for the Royal Television Society Scotland Best Writer, with his anniversary episode of River City winning Best Drama. He is currently writing the final episode of River City for broadcast in 2026. Additional TV credits include Queen Of The New Year and Holby City.

    Johnny has been described as the ‘vanguard of post-modernist panto’, with over 34 pantomime productions under his belt, and multiple Panto UK Awards and nominations.

  • For 17 years Johnny served as Co-Artistic Director of the award-winning Random Accomplice Theatre Company. The company toured new work across the UK and further afield including New York, Prague, Spain, Hong Kong and Singapore. Directing work includes Wendy Hoose, The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam, Promises Promises, Something Wicked, Seven Year Itch, Marymassacre, News Just In and Smalltown.‍ ‍

    He has worked as a freelance director for many organisations including Edinburgh International Festival, National Theatre of Scotland, Scottish Opera, Dundee Rep, Perth Horsecross, Tron Theatre and Macrobert.

    Johnny served as Associate Artist at National Theatre of Scotland from 2021-2024.

  • Johnny currently holds the post of Reader at University of St Andrews, teaching on the MA Playwriting & Screenwriting course.

    He served as Senior Tutor at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Youthworks programme, responsible for the co-ordination, design and appraisal of curriculum for over 300 young people and 22 tutors.

    He has worked for many companies and organisation in the capacity as facilitator and educator including New College Lanarkshire, National Theatre of Scotland, Tron Theatre, Visible Fictions, National Film & Television School, Edinburgh Napier University and Langside College.

    Johnny has had several educational resources published by Scottish Opera.

    He most recently performed She’s Behind You, as part of TravFest 2026.

    He toured thoughout the UK his trilogy of Little Johnny shows with Random Accomplice - Little Johnny’s Big Gay Adventure, Little Johnny’s Big Gay Musical, Little Johnny’s Big Gay Wedding).

    He’s performed with a multitude of companies including National Theatre of Scotland (Appointment with the Wickerman, Dear Scotland); Tron Theatre (Cock, Valhalla); Arches (Tam O’Shanter, Loch Lomond Tales) and Pitlochry Festival Theatre (Wiping My Mother’s Arse).

    For the last 20 years he’s performed in pantomime throughout Scotland.

  • Johnny has served on the boards of arts organisations throughout Scotland for more than 20 years. He is currently a board member of the Tron Theatre and Glass Performance.

    His previous board roles include Macrobert Arts Centre, Glasgay! Festival, Untitled Projects and Wayward Productions.
